the Kanjur Sutra

Sutra, Tantra, and practical instructions indicate the importance of adhering scrupulously to precise iconometric criteria in the creation of images or statues of the Buddha, Masters, Dewas, Dakinis and other subjects in the context of the sacred culture of Buddhist iconography. The course introduces this knowledge by teaching the art of draftsmanship. Drawing is the profound and fundamental base of this Buddhist art, especially important to understand in the Western world where these criteria are often ignored. The ancient texts explain that the arbitrary depiction of sacred images is comparable to a negative action, while a perfect rendering becomes the cause of an accumulation of great positivity.

Paola Minelli is a painter, illustrator, and graphic designer. She has completed eight years of painting studies at the Liceo Artistico and the Academia di Belle Arte in Turin, Italy, and since 1990 has devoted herself to a deepening study of Buddhist art and thangkapainting. She started alongside the artists who painted the frescoes of the Merigar Gompa, chief among whom was Drugu Choegyal, the renowned Mahamudra master and eighth-generation artist in his reincarnation lineage, who, recognizing her nascent capacity, kindly offered her tuition, guidance, and encouragement. Between 1995 and 1996 Paola traveled to Nepal where she studied with the thangkapainter Gega Lama and in India with the thangkapainter Lama Shedrup Sondup.

A longtime student of the canons of traditional Tibetan iconography and iconometry, Paola while respectful of the canons of the sacred texts has developed a style that expresses her artistic prowess in a Western aesthetic language. In the past she taught thangka courses at Shang Shung Institute and is also the designer/illustrator of many Shang Shung Publications.
